The tree lighting at Heritage Place is a City of Conroe event. Most of what happens on the streets around it is run by someone else. This December the Downtown Conroe Association, a volunteer nonprofit, hosts Christmas Around the Square with the City and also takes on the Downtown Conroe Christmas Parade as a new responsibility. That puts much of the historic district's holiday calendar in the hands of a group of downtown supporters.
The association goes back to 2001, when it was incorporated as the Conroe Downtown Area Association. It adopted its current name in 2026. My Neighborhood News reported that its mission covers promoting downtown businesses, supporting beautification and preserving the district's historic character. That explains how this year's season is laid out. The City's events anchor the plaza, the merchants fill the blocks in between, and one theme marking 250 years of the country runs from the first night to parade day.
Tuesday, Dec. 1: one night, two posted schedules
The season opens on a Tuesday, the first one after Thanksgiving. Heritage Place at 500 Metcalf St. hosts the Tree Lighting Ceremony. The City's tree-lighting page mentions choir music and a countdown. When the tree is lit, people head into the streets for Christmas Around the Square, which this year is billed as "Celebrating 250 years of our Country."
The official calendars don't agree on the start time, so plan around the earliest one:
| Event | Downtown Conroe Association | City of Conroe / Visit Conroe |
|---|---|---|
| Tree Lighting, Heritage Place | Description says 6 p.m.; event listing says 6:30 to 7 p.m. | 6:30 to 7 p.m. |
| Christmas Around the Square | 6:30 to 9 p.m. | 7 to 9:30 p.m. per Visit Conroe |
If you arrive by 6 p.m., you'll be there for either version. Check the Downtown Conroe events page the week of the event in case the times are reconciled.
Where the night happens
The Downtown Conroe Association's event page is specific about locations, and for a family trying to move a stroller through a crowd, the locations matter most:
- Santa is at Mimi's on Main. Disney Princesses are at Kofe Nom Pang Coffee House for kids waiting to see him.
- The hayride starts and ends at the Bus Depot on Metcalf, across the street from the Owen Theatre.
- Jazz Connection plays at Founders Plaza Park.
- The Montgomery County Choral Society sings carols by the Nativity Scene on Simonton near the Courthouse Square.
- Caleb and the Ho Ho Ho Homegrown Tomatoes play the Street Dance on Simonton.
- Merchants hand out treats and run Santa's Workshop, Reindeer Games, Letters to Santa and face painting.
The prize drawing is easy to miss. Tickets for the 8 p.m. drawing at Founders Plaza, where bikes and other prizes are given away, come from four information booths. The same booths hand out tokens for voting on your favorite window display. The booths are at Main Street and Hwy 105, San Jacinto and Metcalf, Thompson and Simonton, and Main Street and Metcalf by Founders Plaza Park. Winners must be present. Pick up a ticket at whichever booth you pass first, then work your way toward Founders Plaza before 8. The page says everything that night is free.
The lights run on weekends after opening night
The Founders Plaza Christmas lights at 250 Metcalf St. come on the same night and stay up through Dec. 26. After Dec. 1 they're on only Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, from 5 to 11 p.m., and they're free. A Tuesday or Wednesday walk downtown in mid-December won't include them. Visit Conroe suggests pairing them with dinner and shopping. With a Thursday-to-Saturday schedule, that suggestion fits the next big night on the calendar especially well.
Friday, Dec. 4: three stages within a few blocks
On the first Friday of December, three live events run within a few blocks of each other, all starting at 7:30 p.m.:
- A Christmas Story, presented by Stage Right at the Crighton Theatre, 234 N. Main St.
- Miracle on 34th Street: The Musical at the Owen Theater, 225 Metcalf St., scheduled until 10 p.m.
- Caleb Lee Hutchinson's Long Line of Losers Tour at The Table at Madeley, 316 Madeley St. The venue lists tickets at $17 to $140.
Dec. 4 is a Friday, so the Founders Plaza lights are on until 11 p.m. A family seeing either play can walk past the display on the way back to the car.
Saturday, Dec. 5: the market and the Cookie Walk
The next morning, Main Street Market sets up at 301 N. Thompson St. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vendor details are on the organizer's Facebook page. The Cookie Walk on Main Street runs from 1 to 4 p.m., which overlaps the market's last hour. The Cookie Walk listing gives only the time so far. Check back before you go to see how it works and whether you need a ticket.
Saturday, Dec. 12: parade day under new organizers
The second big day returns to the 250th-anniversary theme from Dec. 1. The Downtown Conroe Christmas Parade's 2026 theme is "An American Christmas Celebrating the 250 years of our Country." It runs from noon to 2 p.m., and admission is free. According to My Neighborhood News, the association expects floats, marching bands, festive vehicles, first responders and local organizations. Participants are encouraged to work patriotic touches into their Christmas entries. Rodney Pool, one of the association's original founding members, is the 2026 grand marshal.
The street-by-street route, closures and parking plan haven't been published yet. The association's Christmas Parade page is where updates will show up.
The City's free Toby Powell Conroe Christmas Celebration runs at Heritage Place the same day. The City lists 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Downtown Conroe listing says 11:30 a.m. Visit Conroe describes pony rides, train rides, snow slides and a visit with Santa. It also says families at the festival get the best view of the parade. The City's event page adds inflatables, activity booths, a vendor market and food vendors. The festival starts before the noon parade, so it's easy to claim a spot at Heritage Place early and stay put.
Families who want an earlier start can go to Donuts With Santa, which the City lists at 710 Foster Dr. from 8 a.m. to noon that morning. Check the City's special events page for registration details before you go.
Before December: November warm-ups
November has a few lower-key weekends:
- Saturday, Nov. 7: Main Street Market at 301 N. Thompson St., 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Grand Central Park's November Artisan Market at The Lake House, 1039 Lake House Drive, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21 and 22: the Big Top Shopping Festival at Heritage Place, 500 Metcalf St., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free admission.
Two Conroe restaurants opened on Oct. 13 and are new options for a holiday night out. Community Impact reported that Nana Soul Food opened its brick-and-mortar restaurant at 2017 N. Frazier St. Spectators Bar & Grill opened at 1259 Grand Central Parkway, according to Community Impact.
